Mallika Class
Here the foundation of dancing begins. I use a pedagogical approach to teaching Bharatanatyam, with a focus on a developmentally appropriate approach. Our class includes a circle of warm-ups, prayers to Mother Earth (Bhumidevi), foundational step (adavu) practice, free dance, and mudra practice. I place an emphasis on comfort and joy in movement, while bringing structure through rhythm to the class which the students can anticipate. The beauty of artistic expression takes precedent over the productivity of performing.
Pankaja Class
Moving on from the foundations, this class begins to explore more complex adavus that become the building blocks for dances. We continue to practice the basics each class, as well as learn dances that stretch their abilities and confidences as dancers.
Kamala Class
In this class, items from the traditional repertoire (margam) are begun. Strength building, understanding Bharatanatyam terminology, and practicing expressive (abhinaya) pieces are all introduced. Foundational steps are continued to be taught to create the vocabulary for more complicated dances.
Surya-mukhi Class
This class continues to build on the repertoire of the dancers up to Jatiswaram and Shabdam. Technique, more complex steps, story-telling through dance, as well as more performance opportunities throughout the year are all focused on.
Parijata Class
In this class, the students increase their repertoire, introducing Padams and Thillanas. Students can expect complex patterns of adavus, stamina building exercises, an understanding of rhythmic cycles (thalam), as well as a deepening of their emotional expressions.
